URUGUAY. Nine companies launch 19 bids for Uruguay oil

Quest for energy resources inspired by massive deep-water finds in Brazil 

Nine energy companies have submitted 19 bids to explore for oil off the coast of energy-poor Uruguay. The discovery of massive deep-water reserves off Brazil's Atlantic coast has encouraged neighboring Uruguay to look for energy resources along its own coastline in hopes of reducing its dependence on imports. Bids were made by Britain's BP and the BG Group, France's Total, Shell and Exxon Mobil, Reuters reports.

And he counts the days until he leaves. "Caracas is a war zone," he says. "I just want to make sure that I'm not another statistic," LBC reports.

ARGENTINA. New rules introduce bank approval for certain payments abroad

The Argentine Central Bank recently enacted Communication A5295, establishing certain rules that regulate media and technology companies' payments abroad. The communication sets forth that if the payee is a foreign party that is directly or indirectly related to the paying party or to a foreign party that resides in a tax haven, payment for certain rights or services requires the prior approval of the Central Bank.

US and VENEZUELA. Venezuela reaches settlement with US companies over oilfield assets

Imagine me getting another turbo charger, quips Brazilian billionaire

 

Eike Batista said he's in talks with sovereign-wealth funds to sell an additional $1 billion stake in holding company EBX Group as he continues his quest to become the world's richest man. "Imagine me getting my engine and adding another turbo charger," Batista said. Earlier in the day he had announced a deal to sell 5.63 percent of his empire of commodity companies to Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Development Co. for $2 billion, Bloomberg reports.

Enrique Peña Nieto has a very big lead in presidential race but he is not yet home and dry

 

Twelve years ago Mexicans voted to boot the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) out of government, in the first fair presidential election in the country's history. But when Mexicans go to the polls on July 1, they look likely to vote the old ruling party back to power. As the presidential campaign officially begins today, Enrique Peña Nieto, the PRI's candidate, has a poll lead of around 15 percentage points. Turning the campaign around is not impossible. But unless there is a radical change, Mexico is on course to bring back the old regime, The Economist reports.
